At the 2019 FIVB Challengers Cup, which is taking place this weekend in Lima, Peru, Iowa State junior middle blocker Candelaria Herrera will be competing for Argentina along with the senior women’s national team. The competition will take place from June 26-30, and Las Panteras are scheduled to play Chinese Taipei at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by Canada at the same time on Friday. On the other side of the pool are the hosts, Peru, as well as the Czech Republic and Croatia.
Should Herrera and the Argentines finish in the top two spots in the three-team pool, they will move on to the elimination bracket on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the semifinals will be held at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., and on Sunday, there will be a match for third place at 4 p.m. and the final will be held at 7 p.m. There will be a competition between the six teams to determine who will earn a berth in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League in 2020.
The summer for Herrera has been something of a whirlwind. After the end of the school year, Herrera relocated to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to begin his senior year of national team training with Argentina. Her time spent with them was interrupted for a short period of time when the Cyclones went on tour in South America at the beginning of June. Herrera traveled with the team for eight days and participated in six matches while they were in Argentina and Peru.
On June 9, following the conclusion of the Cyclones’ final match in Peru, Herrera flew back to Buenos Aires to continue his training with the national team. After putting in a lot of effort over the past six weeks, she has earned the chance to potentially make her debut for Las Panteras this upcoming weekend. The Iowa State junior has not competed with any of her teammates from Argentina in any of Argentina’s three warm-up matches. Two of Argentina’s warm-up matches were played against the Iowa State team that featured Herrera, and the third was played against Colombia during an Iowa State match that took place in Peru.

With an 11th overall position in the FIVB rankings, Argentina enters this weekend’s competition as the favorite. After being the team that finished last in the 2018 FIVB Nations League competition, Las Panteras will be competing to earn a spot in the prestigious competition again in the coming year. The Argentines are grouped together with the second-highest ranked team in the competition, which is Canada (ranked No. 18).
Every match will be played at the Coliseo Manuel Bonilla in Lima, which is located in Peru. The Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts of the Iowa State volleyball team will be updated with any information regarding live streaming. On Wednesday, Herrera will take over the responsibilities of managing the Instagram account for Iowa State University’s volleyball team.
