Final phase of the 2022 women’s VNL: Players to watch and interesting stories
The most anticipated match of the quarterfinals is the one that features the United States of America and Serbia. The Americans have won both the Olympic championship and the VNL championship a record three times in a row. As the team that now holds the title of World Champion, Serbia has established themselves as an outstanding nation in their own right.
Two of the most successful international teams over the past several years will go head-to-head in a contest that will put their skills to the test.
The United States of America had an outstanding run leading up to the competition, winning 11 of their 12 games.
Sarah Wilhite, an outside hitter for the United States team, made the following statement following the conclusion of the preliminary phase: “It’s been a pretty long five weeks, and after 12 matches, it’s incredibly essential to conclude by winning. We have a really talented collection of players, and we intend to make a strong run at the championship.
Sara Caric and Maja Aleksic, two new stars from Serbia, will need to step up to the challenge presented by the absence of Serbia’s veteran players Tijana Boskovic and Maja Ognjenovic.
Since 2007, Serbia and the United States of America have competed against one another in 22 international events. 15 of the matches were won by the Americans, who were victorious over the Serbians in Calgary last week, taking the match in straight sets.
On their road to the quarterfinals, Brazil qualified in second place behind the United States of America and won ten of the twelve games they played. They will compete against a Japanese team that suffered four losses in the previous week and is seeking to turn their luck around. With an incredible eight-match winning streak to start the VNL, the Asian champions were the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals and go on to win the tournament. A form that they will work hard to get back into in order to be successful in the championship match.
The two teams last competed against one another in the Pool stages of the Tokyo 2020 tournament. The Brazilian team secured the silver medal in the Olympic competition after claiming victory in straight sets.
Watch the duel at the net between the Japanese captain Sarina Koga and the Brazilian player Ana Carolina “Carol” da Silva. Koga has accumulated 243 points throughout the VNL season, making him the second top scorer in the league. With 52 blocks to his name, Da Silva dominates the competition as the best blocker.
When the Italian national team plays the Chinese national team, they will be searching for payback. During the preliminary round, the Italian team only suffered two defeats, one of which came at the hands of the Chinese. Following a successful week in Sofia, Bulgaria, where they won three out of four matches, the gold medalists from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be looking to keep up their winning pace.
Keep a watch out for Paola Egonu, who is only 23 years old but is already having an impact for Italy. The rising star has been performing at a high level recently and is currently in contention for the title of top player in the world. On the other side of the net, Yingying Li will be competing for China and aiming to build a name for herself as a spiker.

Hosts Turkey will seek to capitalize on the support they receive from their fans at home. They will rely heavily on the experience of Olympians Cansu Ozbay, Zehra Gunes, Ebrar Karakurt, and Eda Erdem, as well as Meryem Boz’s expertise and point-scoring capabilities. So far in the competition, they have a win-loss record that is a mixed bag, with five defeats and seven victories.
They will compete against Thailand, who won the previous time these two teams faced each other, at the VNL 2021 tournament. Before this year, the Thai team has never made it to the final round of competition. Prior to 2019, they had a prior best of 12th place.
